Bonjay’s Stumble/Creepin’, our latest release, is out now – both on our limited-edition handcrafted notebook (12cm x 10cm) and as a standalone digital download. The physical release is selling fast, but you can still order yours from the One Bird Records store. Each notebook is numbered, and only 200 have been produced.

Bonjay announce MEN support shows

Bonjay have announced two new dates supporting MEN, the Brooklyn-based band and art/performance collective. MEN are a three-piece comprising JD Samson (Le Tigre), Michael O’Neill (Ladybug Transistor) and Ginger Brooks Takahashi (LTTR).

Bonjay’s debut UK release, the double A-side ‘Creepin’/’Stumble’, is released on June 6 on a limited-edition hand-crafted notebook (and standalone digital download) – and available to pre-order now from One Bird Records’ online store.

Our next release is coming out on June 6 – and you can order Bonjay’s Stumble/Creepin on notebook here (it’s limited edition, so be quick). But in the meantime, we’ve got a free remix for you, by CHLLNGR - the alias of Copenhagen-based Californian Steven Jess Borth II, who’s previously remixed the XX (which premiered on Pitchfork) and M.I.A., and worked with Kanye West as part of his other project Teachers. Pretty beautiful reimagining of the wintery soul of the original.

Bonjay’s brand-new video for ‘Creepin’, out June 6 with ‘Stumble’, premiered at The Line Of Best Fit last week. The video sets ‘Creepin’ to snippets of Bill Mason’s 1972 documentary ‘Cry of the Wild’ - and is set in the arctic climes that lie north of Alanna and Pho’s Toronto home:

Youthless reveal new Smurfs-inspired video and free mp3

Portugal’s Youthless return with a free download of ‘Good Hunters’, their break-up song. As warm, caring and snappy as their UK debut ‘Golden Age’, ‘Good Hunters’ is about leaving the one you love whilst loving the one you leave. And with it, comes a brand new video which brings the song to life with a guest appearance from the world’s favourite small blue fictional creatures, The Smurfs.

Youthless are Alex Klimovitsky (vocals, drums, keyboard) and Sebastiano Ferranti (bass), originally from New York and London. The duo’s refreshingly direct songs have already caught the attention of NME, Drowned in Sound and CMU, and the A New Band A Day blog went so far as to name Youthless its favourite band of 2010.

This latest cut is the original demo of ‘Good Hunters’ – fresh, lithe and full-to-bursting all at once. A studio version was recorded for the Portuguese label Enchufada and produced by ambassadors of the vibrant Angolan dance genre kuduro, Buraka Som Sistema. The studio version of ‘Good Hunters’ soared to number four on the Portuguese MTV charts. The free mp3 we have hear is altogether rougher sounding, and a great insight into Alex and Sebastiano’s minds at work.

The demo version was recorded in a basement in Lisbon on an old Akai 4-track, and completed in a bedroom in west village of New York. “We mess around with whatever old and weird stuff we have in whatever practice room we’re in,” says Sebastiano. It’s such that the main hook – which sounds like a dirty synth – is actually a classic guitar played through an oddball array of distortion pedals.

“I wrote the lyrics a few hours before we recorded them, on the subway from my ex-girlfriend’s apartment,” Alex explains. The lyrics describe a relationship from infant beginnings to its inevitable end, comparing two lovers to prehistoric hunter-gatherers of affection and security who eventually choose to follow different roads when their emotional sustenance has run out.

“Vocalist Alanna Stuart and producer Ian “Pho” Swain, a Toronto-based duo who mash up dancehall bass culture with electro dance vibes and hypnotic R&B hooks.

[Alanna] has cited Lady Saw as an inspiration, but Stuart sounds closer to Santigold on a soulful day, with low, sultry R&B vocals, the product of a childhood spent in church choir and teen gospel competitions. She almost ended up an “R&B starlet” during her teens but abandoned that path in favour of university, where she sang backing vocals for indie bands and shared stages with artists like Feist (Bonjay do a wonderfully grimey, uptempo remix of her 2008 number Honey Honey).”
